English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
In terms of ESOL - English to Speakers of Other Languages students who did not learn English as their native tongue and continue to use other than English as a dominant language would be considered an English language learner (ELLs). The purpose of the ESOL – English for Speakers of Other Languages program is to assist limited English proficient students to develop proficiency in the English language. The component of the ESOL – English for Speakers of Other Languages such as engages students in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students are sufficient to perform effectively at the assigned grade level.
There are several reasons that more students do not have the reading skills that they need and experts in the field of reading have become locked out in a senseless battle, which has generated much heat and even less improvement in the reading skills of students. As of today, many scholars recognize that good reading instruction integrates elements of the phonics method to teach learners how to match the letters of the alphabet to the speech sounds they already know. At age five, children who are ready to learn to read have a vocabulary of some 6,000 words and understand far more than that when they hear from parents and other people. Phonemic awareness (PA) is very important, teaching children to manipulate phonemes in the word is highly effective under a variety of teaching conditions with a variety of learners across a range of grade and age levels, and teaching phonemic awareness to children significantly improves their reading skills.
Writing and Language Skills Preparation for High School Equivalency Tests
Plan, Draft, Evaluate
Plan: Examine their task. Who is the audience? What is the purpose? Students will do research on their topic, read and examine source materials, brainstorm ideas, and think through what students want to say.
Draft: Prewrite and compose student work. They might start with a central idea, some supporting ideas, and evidence or examples. Then, fill in details, connections, transitions, and conclusions.
Evaluate: As student work, evaluate their writing. It is successful? Does it communicate? Continue to plan, and revise, and student will edit their draft. When their draft is done, set it aside for a while before they read it again. When they return to the draft, evaluate it for clarity and decide whether it makes sense.
